Re: Oops, done it again

I gave up in the end. Realised with ten saxes, two small children and a busy life I was never going to bring this back to life, so I flogged it again. A bit of a shame I guess, as it really was quite interesting - nickel plate, fully ribbed construction, front F key, super-solid build. Not a makers ...

Re: Opening phrase

Hi Sport

I've got a Bauhaus Walstein curved soprano as well, and a Bauhaus baritone too. Both are fantastic. I also have a pretty expensive Yanagisawa tenor and a few high quality vintage saxes, and the best of the Chinese built new wave saxes stack up pretty well against them.

Re: Aquilasax

Hi Al

No, I didn't get to try the Aquilasax. Something to do with buying a new baritone......

Aquilasax

Aquilasax C Mel now available at sax.co.uk I'm planning a trip down to their Crowborough shop to have a go on one, it's only 25 minutes away by motorbike. I prefer to go on the bike. If I take the wife's car I'm a bit too tempted to buy something big and expensive. On the bike I'm limited to whatev...

Oops, done it again

Oh dear, I've gone and done it again. Bought another sax, this time an unknown C Mel from eBay. Looks a bit Buescher-ish, but I'm not at all sure - also seems to have some European features. Still, it was only £87. Might be asking for some assistance with identifying it once I get it.

Re: New sax

She blows just great. Although I have a range of great saxes, the Yani alto is all I've played for the last two weeks. My alto mouthpiece is a Yanagisawa metal 7, so unsurprisingly it works great with the new sax. Tone is great, very cosistant through the range. Maybe not as nice as my super-creamy ...

New sax

Well, I've gone and got another new one, alto this time. It's an Astro badged Yanagisawa A6, picked up from SOTW for the princely sum of £80 delivered. It had an incorrect neck with a bust spring, siezed solid, a dodgy Eb guard and needed a few leaks sealed. Still, for £80? Well, got a new underslun...

Re: Using a different mouthpiece

Sounds like you got one of the notoriously inconsistent, duff Bergs. Mine is an SMS facing, with good tip and rails and it plays very well. I think any Berg with a 0 chamber should play brightly. I have heard of others which are marked as a 0 but actually have a baffle more like that of a 2. I've al...

Using a different mouthpiece

For a while now I've been using a Berg Larsens stainless duckbill 120/0 on my C Mel. It absolutely rocks, but one thing it's no good at is subtlety. So I've tried another alternative from my box of mad mouthpieces. This is an elderly Otto Link STM 10 with a huge epoxy added baffle. Great fun, it als...

Re: my thumbstub has come off

Hi there If I were in your position, I'd go for one of two options. 1 Depending on where you are (let me guess, Pitlochry?) drive down to Edinburgh and get it fixed properly in one of that fine city's music emporiums, or 2 Use Araldite. I know it sounds like heresy, but I've used it for various...
