1962/63 Richards Martin Magna alto saxophone

SOLD !.

My baby...   ca. 1962/63, s/no 218xxx - original lacquer in remarkably good condition, plus silver keys and silver cross on bell and neck.  In a lovely Berkeley hard shell case.  I'm open to serious offers in the region of £1400  ( 1400 UK Pounds - that's around, at today's rates, US$1900 or 1500 Euros, plus shipping ) and I will ship to anywhere in the civilised world, VERY safely packed.   Email link is at the bottom of this page.

It's a bit special in all respects , and none of the other instruments I own (or have ever owned) have a sound that approaches its flexibility.   But, I play very lttle alto these days, and this is a saxophone that deserves to be played a lot, and really enjoyed - not just sit neglected in a case !

Here's how it plays, bit of Grover Washington soundalike,  - with a $50 Aquilasax metal mouthpiece that I'm really getting to like.  You can tell I don't play much alto anymore, but I think this sound sample shows a little of the very expressive sounds that it's capable of.   Price ?   Serious offers in the region of £1400 - that's around, at today's rates, US$1900 or 1500 Euros, plus shipping - naturally you can come down to Weymouth and test-play it (by appointment...)   The mouthpiece shown in the picture, an elderly Lawton - is for for illustration purposes only, and I'm keeping it, - but I might be able to supply else something very suitable ( I have a few alto mouthpieces around...) if you don't already have your own favourite alto mouthpiece you'd wish to use on the Magna.

The saxophone was completely overhauled  by a London dealer (Don Mackrill), immediately prior to me purchasing it from him in the very early 90's, and has been used sparingly since - especially as I now tend to primarily play  C Saxophones.  The pads are in very good condition, with a little discoloration on a few, and the only signs of darkening are really on the high/palm keys.  They all seal really well, and obviously the horn plays perfectly.

The original lacquer is in really good condition, as you can see from the pictures, with only minor lacquer wear in 'major contact' areas like the thumbrest - but on close inspection there is a little pitting in places on some of the silver keywork.  The Magna is in excellent physical condition, no major dents/dings, no signs that I can see of any previous repairs or resoldering, and it comes with the original feature neck (same serial number) that's also damage-free.

Some of the following pictures have been selected to highlight the few areas where there is any wear, to try and show the general condition of the pads, and also the two small blemishes - one up by the neck socket, and the other just below the bell-B tonehole, on the bell/bow-joint (that one's hard to see...) - and the rest are just to show off the saxophones beautiful art-deco design, .  The regulation is pretty good, it plays well but the odd bit of cork may be just a tiny bit compressed, as has been the neck cork - I'll give the sax a good check (an excuse for a farewell play...) and hopefully rectify anything else I find before shipping.
