 Johnny Dankworth
In Britain, John Dankworth plays a 1921 Hawkes C-Mel, which cost him eighty pounds when he discovered it in the pages of Exchange and Mart some twenty-odd years ago.  He uses a Lawton tenor mouthpiece, in plastic, specially adapted for him by Geoff Lawton, which uses ordinary tenor reeds.

John Dankworth plays C-Melody with his Dankworth Generation Band.  The idea was to have one of everything. The instrumentation includes one trombone, one French Horn, one tuba, and one each of alto, tenor and baritone saxophones. There is one flugel horn, and John cheated a little to get a strong brass section by having two trumpets. John, with typical modesty, claims that he didn't wish to play a type of saxophone that was being played better by somebody else in the band. Therefore, he decided to play C-Melody.

** Listen to Nathan Haynes hurtling (poor quality...) along on a Conn C-Mel Just Maybe - live

For the full version, including vocals, at much higher quality - click on >>  http://myspace.com/nathanhaines
- then click on "
Just Maybe Live" and in between the vocals is a lovely flowing sax solo on a straight-neck Conn C-Mel.

Nathan plays (to quote him) "It's a 1923 Gold artist model I found in mint unplayed condition....the mouthpiece was an Otto link re-bored to fit the neck and works fine for me. It's my fave 'jazz' horn as the sound is so clearly vintage with a great feel.It doesn't project like a tenor and I can't get my head around the harmonics (all different for some reason) so the range is limited but I do love playing it."

Nathan has also recorded a background sound sample on the new 2007 Aquilasax C , for Steve's website - click here       Update 4/2008 - samples now available on the mp3 player - at the top of this page...

Andy Mackintosh

Played C-Melody sax with the Frank Ricotti All-Stars for the 'Biederbecke'tracks - the music for three UK TV series.

The Beiderbecke Affair' (1984) - Follow the exploits of Jazz nut Trevor Chaplin (James Bolam), and his long-suffering girlfriend Jill Swinburne (Barbara Flynn). Whilst trying to track down a set of missing records they encounter a mystery platinum blonde who weaves a complex web of intrigue that soon escalates to dealing with dodgy businessmen, 'black economies' and council corruption.

'The Beiderbecke Tapes' (1987) - Feature length mystery with Trevor and Jill as they continue to embroil themselves in all sorts of clandestine meetings and intrigue. Nuclear waste in the Yorkshire Dales, sinister conversations and a missing barman take Trevor and Jill on a whirlwind mystery from the Dales to Amsterdam and Edinburgh.

'The Beiderbecke Connection' (1988) - Trevor and Jill are now parents to a baby boy, however their old pals Big Al and Little Norm prevail upon them to give sanctuary to a homeless refugee. It is not long however before they are again caught up in a complex deception of a musical kind featuring the music of jazz supremo Frank Ricotti.
